When a contractor doing plumbing work removed the tap from a water main at 87th and York Avenue on Thursday, a gush of water was sent flying into the sky. The incident occurred a bit before 2pm and was first reported on by Upper East Site.

The tap was put back in its place, but there was a big mess, and utility companies were called to check out the nearby buildings. A spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Protection said the worker was from a private company which was doing work for a nearby home’s water service.
This construction accident follows the giant sinkhole which appeared just a couple blocks away last week, though the two incidents do not appear to be related.
