The Brooklyn-based Dumbo Market will be setting up shop on the Upper East Side at a former CVS location at 1223 Second Avenue (between 64th and 65th streets).

According to the New York Post, the market signed a lease for the 12,000 square foot space with Regency Centers, the owner of the retail condominium.

“I’m appreciative of the opportunity to work with Dumbo Market on their expansion. With the potential overflow of pending drug store vacancies on the horizon, we will continue to scout new locations [for them],” Jason Gerbsman, the principal of HUDSON and who represented Dumbo Market, told the Post.

In addition to the upcoming Upper East Side location, Dumbo Market has stores in Dumbo and Boerum Hill in Brooklyn, and according to the LIC Post, another shop will be opening in Long Island City.

Mohammad Mujalli founded Dumbo Market in 2019, expanding to Boerum Hill three years later. Mujalli operates Dumbo Market in conjunction with his family’s Urban Market grocery chain, which counts locations in all five boroughs and New Jersey.

Dumbo Market offers a wide-range of upscale food and beverage choices. In addition to imported domestic and craft beers and ciders, the market sells fresh meat and seafood, imported and domestic dairy products and produce, as well as sushi, baked goods, deli selections and hot and cold grab-and-go options. Additionally, it features a café with espresso drinks and pastries.

Between Google and Yelp, reviews for Dumbo Market’s existing Brooklyn locations are mixed. Many positive reviews emphasize the grocer’s wide selection of goods, though an unfortunate number of customers have reported products covered in mold and uncompetitive prices.

A company representative tells us they’re looking to open in the fall or winter, which will make it the second new grocer to open in the immediate area. In September, Whole Foods opened up its second location in the neighborhood and its first “small format store.” Compared to its larger equivalents, the Whole Foods Daily Market Shop, located at 1175 Third Avenue (between 68th and 69th streets) focuses more on grab-and-go offerings and good quality essentials and staples, with over 400 local products from over 100 suppliers.
