Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg has announced the indictment of 28-year-old Donovan Murphy, who was arrested earlier this month for raping a woman on the Upper East Side while she slept.

“As alleged, Donovan Murphy committed horrific acts of violence and sexual assault in a woman’s own apartment,” Bragg said. “Every New Yorker deserves to be safe in their own home, and we will continue to work hand in hand with our partners in law enforcement to make that a reality.”

The ordeal began a little after midnight on September 28 when Murphy, a Bronx resident, followed a woman back to her apartment on the Upper East Side and rang multiple buzzers in an attempt to enter the building, according to the DA’s office. He reportedly left shortly after when the woman’s husband approached the front door with a baseball bat.

Then, at around 3:40 a.m., Murphy is said to have entered a second woman’s apartment on 92nd and First Avenue, a few blocks away. After swiping several bank cards, Murphy allegedly climbed into the victim’s bed while she was fast asleep. After she awoke screaming in terror and falling from her bed, Murphy reportedly “grabbed her from behind and punched her repeatedly in the face, causing a 5-centimeter, muscle-deep laceration to her mouth and fracturing her facial bones,” the press release says, adding that Murphy then allegedly choked her prior to sexually assaulting and raping her.

Murphy was arrested October 2 on the Lower East Side. He has been charged with Rape in the First Degree, Burglary in the First Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony, and Assault in the Second degree, among other charges.

Murphy is next due in New York Criminal Court on November 1, according to court records.
