A driver was killed on the Upper East Side near 72nd Street on the FDR Drive early Tuesday after she crashed her Tesla.

According to ABC News, the white Tesla was speeding northbound on the FDR before it struck a guardrail near the 71st Street exit, heading toward 72nd Street, around 3 a.m.

The FDNY told East Side Feed on Wednesday that 12 units responded to the crash. The woman who was driving was declared dead on the scene and has not been identified. The 26-year-old male passenger, meanwhile, was taken to an area hospital and was stabilized.

“We just got out to run and see if he was OK,” one witness told PIX11 News on Tuesday. “And he was barely moving… part of the car was maybe a couple of feet away, and we asked him, ‘Hey, was someone else in the car?’”

Another witness told ABC News that the driver was going at least “120, 130 [miles per hour].”

Traffic was backed up for miles following the crash, according to ABC, with traffic only resuming on northbound lanes around 8:30 a.m.

Teslas, and the electric lithium ion batteries that power them, have notoriously complicated rescue attempts following crashes, as they tend to erupt into an inferno.

Just last week, a person died in Southern California following a fiery vehicle crash as rescuers could not get to the passenger in time due to the resultant blaze.
