Popular Lower East Side smashburger joint 7th Street Burger is opening a second location on the Upper East Side. Just a few blocks from the shop at 84th and Second Avenue, the growing burger restaurant is taking the space once occupied by Hot & Crusty at 1276 Lexington Avenue (between 85th and 86th streets), right next to Krispy Kreme.

Since opening his first restaurant on East 7th Street in 2021, owner Kevin Rezvani has quickly expanded. His initial gamble—leasing the former home of Caracas Arepa Bar amid pandemic shutdowns, a move that maxed out his credit card, he told the New York Times—has paid off. He’s since opened an additional 16 locations in Manhattan, ventured into Washington D.C., and is soon expanding to his home state of New Jersey.”

Despite such rapid expansion, Eater reported last year that the menu has stayed simple and the burger delicious. Although they’ve added a bit to the original menu that offered only the single and double burger and Impossible Burger, fries and bottles of Mexican Coke, they’ve still kept it simple. The current menu at 1603 Second Avenue offers those originals along with loaded fries, sides of sauce and a chocolate chip cookie. That location has 4.9 stars on GrubHub with almost 3,000 reviews.

The array of 7th Street Burger merchandise is far more extensive than its food offerings. Their website sells a variety of different t-shirt and sweatshirt designs along with hats, pins, stickers and keychains. Many of them feature anime-style art and the brand’s signature Lucky Cat logo, most likely an homage to the owner’s days working at his grandfather’s bakery in Japan.

Like many NYC burgers, those served at 7th Street are often held up to Shake Shack as a marker of comparison, and according to Eater, they have surpassed it. With this location just around the corner from the Upper East Side’s own Shack Shake, there is sure to be competition. 7th Street is known for being open late, and although hours for this new location aren’t yet available, the restaurant on Second Avenue currently closes at 3 a.m. daily. Check their website or Instagram for updates.
