A new French bistro called Les Vagabonds Boucherie has landed in Sutton Place.

Located at 1070 First Avenue (between 58th and 59th streets), the space previously housed a popular hangout called Café Joul before its closure back in 2015.

Les Vagabonds bills itself on its Instagram page as a “Parisian steakhouse.” The restaurant is being headed by Chef Edgar “Teo” Navarette of Osteria Nando and Motrya Tomycz.

“Coming soon to New York City, a project twenty years in the making, First Ave. & 58th St. in Sutton Place,” Navarette posted on his personal Instagram page accompanied by a picture of Les Vagabonds’ etched motorcycle logo roughly 18 weeks ago.

Tomycz told East Side Feed this week that although her and Navarette have been in the restaurant business for a while, Les Vagabonds is the first restaurant that “is just ours.”

“The inspiration [for the restaurant] was a book of Man Ray photography that Edgar had,” she said via text on Monday. “For years he had the idea to open a French restaurant around the name Les Vagabonds with the photos from the book as inspiration.”

Tomycz also shared a copy of the menu with East Side Feed. It’s mostly classic French faire: Escargot du Bourgogne ($19) and Moules Marinieres ($24) on the appetizer side; a filet mignon Chateau Steak for $55 and Steak Au Poivre ($46), along with Beef Bourguignon ($39) and Coq au Vin ($34) for the main plates. However, she noted that the menu will likely be updated as they continue to tweak brunch and lunch offerings.

The restaurant is currently in its soft-opening phase and taking limited reservations. Tomycz couldn’t say exactly when the restaurant would officially open.

Les Vagabonds joins the Upper East Side’s bourgeoning French cuisine scene, which recently saw the opening of the popular and chic Chez Fifi, located at 140 East 74th Street (between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue).
