Not much beats the summer heat like a Frrrozen Hot Chocolate from Serendipty3. With New York City heading into its third heat wave in as many weeks, some would call it a stroke of fortune that the famous restaurant is now reopened for business. Other may say it is good luck. But the best descriptor here is simply (and obviously) … serendipitous.
After a yearlong shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, Serendipity3 reopened its flagship location at 225 East 60th Street to the public on July 9 with a bit of a “facelift” and a new celebrity partner (and an early celebrity guest).

The menu still includes its signature items including nine varieties of Frrrozen Hot Chocolate and its record-holding selections that must be ordered in advance. But diners can expect some new additions to both the cuisine and the décor. Antique clocks and Tiffany Lamps complement the new kitchen, with new menu items including an ‘Infamous Truffle Burger’ with Boursin Cheese & Black Truffle Mayo, an ‘It’s My Birthday Cake Sundae’ that includes Cake Batter Ice Cream, a giant piece of Cake, Whipped Cream, Hot Fudge, & a Cherry on top, and much more!”
After opening its doors 65 years ago, Serendipity3 boasts a legendary status that includes wearable chocolate and seven Guinness World Records, five of which appear on the current menu:
- Golden Opulence Sundae – most expensive dessert
- Le Burger Extravagant – most expensive hamburger
- Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich – most expensive sandwich
- Foot Long Haute Dog – most expensive hot dog
- Luxe Milkshake – most expensive milkshake
It does not appear that the other two record holders – the largest wedding cake and the largest cup of hot chocolate/cocoa – are available at this time.
With a menu this extraordinary and an eatery this iconic, it’s no wonder this New York institution has been given the star treatment including appearances in its namesake movie, Serendipity in 2001, the romantic comedy One Fine Day starring Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney, the Gossip Girl book series, and Trust the Man starring David Duchovny.
The most recent boost of star power is new partner and investor, music superstar Selena Gomez. “I remember going there on my first trip to NYC with my mom when I was young,” Gomez told Travel + Leisure. “We loved the film ‘Serendipity,’ so we just had to go there.”
Last year, Gomez teamed up with the famed restaurant to create her own ice cream flavor called Cookies and Cream Remix to coincide with the premiere of her HBO Max show, Selena + Chef, and the release of her single “Ice Cream.” Gomez’s cold creation and some other frozen treats are available through the restaurant’s online retailer, SerendipityBrand.com.
