Tarallucci e Vino’s Upper West Side location

An NYC staple for Italian cuisine has plans to open a new location on the Upper East Side.

Luca de Pietro, who founded Tarallucci e Vino in 2001 and has grown it to four restaurants in Manhattan, spoke at a recent Community Board 8 meeting about the business and a new outpost he’s planning at 1207 Lexington Avenue (at East 82nd Street). The address previously housed BIS, a casual Mediterranean eatery that closed in June after about a year and a half.

Tarallucci e Vino currently has locations on the Upper West Side, near Union Square and in Nomad, and they also operate the cafe at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum on East 90th St., though the cafe does not have a full menu.

“Wherever we are we’ve really become members of the community,” said de Pietro, who is from the Central Italian region of Abruzzo. He added that he plans to apply for an outdoor roadway dining permit for the new location.

Tarallucci e Vino’s three full locations are open for breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner. In addition to homemade pastas, breads and pastries, menu highlights include Cacio e Pepe (handmade tonnarelli, pecorino romano, black peppercorn); Agnello (12 ounce rack of lamb, herb pangrattato, parsnip puree, Spanish onion, roasted carrots, jus); Pappardelle Rosa (beet pappardelle, 12-hour duck confit, cherry tomatoes, parmigiano); and Roman-style pizzas. The dinner menu also offers a selection of meats and cheeses that are served with olives and crostini.

The restaurant also has a wine list dominated by Italian selections. The board unanimously approved the restaurant’s application for a liquor license (which means it now goes to the SLA; community board votes are advisory only).

According to its website, Tarallucci e Vino’s goal is to “bring the ease and casual elegance of Italy’s bars and ‘caffés’ to New Yorkers and visitors…and to uphold the Italian ideal of high quality, sustainable, locally sourced, seasonal food, prepared to highlight the natural beauty of the ingredients.”
