The son of a U.S. District Judge has pleaded guilty to felony charges after allegedly filming sexual encounters with women without their consent at multiple Upper East Side apartments he rented.

The perpetrator is Daniel McAvoy, son of U.S. District Judge Thomas McAvoy. The 51-year-old admitted to seven counts of unlawful surveillance in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, Gothamist reports. Despite the admission, McAvoy may avoid jail time as Justice Ellen Biben allowed an open plea, which delays McAvoy’s final sentencing until he’s completed a year of court-ordered treatment.

McAvoy was indicted in 2022 for secretly recording sexual encounters he had with four women in various UES apartments he rented. According to public records, some of his past addresses have included 325 East 90th Street, 350 East 92nd Street, and 1590 First Avenue. He allegedly filmed dozens of other women, but has limited liability due to the statute of limitations.

Gothamist reports that investigators found three hard drives and more than 150 DVDs labeled with names and “specific sex acts in pornographic terms” that McAvoy kept at his father’s home outside Binghamton, NY. Officials searched the home after receiving a tip from McAvoy’s then girlfriend. Patch reports the elder McAvoy, who was nominated by Ronald Reagan and confirmed into office in 1986, has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Patch also reports that McAvoy is facing a civil suit from a Jane Doe who is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. Her complaint reveals that McAvoy exhibited odd behavior throughout their relationship, including not allowing her to take pictures of him, demanding she send images and videos of herself, and only seeing her at his residences.

“He is an over 50-year-old man who purportedly has a master’s degree and is self-employed with adequate resources,” Assistant District Attorney Danielle Turcotte said in court, according to Gothamist. “He made this decision to violate the trust of his sexual partners countless times over the last fifteen years.”
