Crowds of shocked onlookers witnessed a taxi going up in flames on 83rd and First Avenue on Tuesday. The incident took place just before 6pm and multiple videos showing the frightening fire from different angles have been shared.
“What is that,” said one witness who shared a video on Citizen App. “It’s a car on fire. Oh my god it’s going to catch the scaffolding on fire, holy sh*t.”

“Honestly this is absurd how long it’s taking for them to come,” said one witness waiting for the FDNY, adding that they’d been waiting over 5 minutes. Sounds of sirens could be heard, along with a small explosion, right after his comment.

According to one witness, “the taxi was pulling into the building, and lit on fire — exploded. The taxi, elderly woman and [aid] were all able to get out of the car before the front of it engulfed in flames.”
The FDNY deemed the fire under control around 30 minutes after the FDNY arrived. No injuries have been reported as of writing.
