A manhole fire sent smoke over an Upper East Side block on Wednesday morning and closed part of a nearby avenue, and the incident wasn’t wrapped up until hours later.

The call came in at 10:23 a.m. for a report of a smoking manhole at 447 E. 87th St., between York and First avenues, the FDNY told East Side Feed. Units responded and utilities were notified. No injuries were reported, and the department closed the incident at 2:07 p.m., nearly four hours after the first call.

A 10:42 a.m. update on Citizen, which placed the incident at East 87th Street and York Avenue, said police were blocking a portion of York Avenue as a precaution. Video posted to the app showed smoke billowing from the manhole, and a 10:49 a.m. update said firefighters were dousing it as smoke continued to rise from the pavement.
NYPD radio audio posted to the app at 11:06 a.m. referenced an unconfirmed explosion, and one commenter wrote that the pavement around the manhole was on fire.
FDNY radio audio posted at 11:17 a.m. referenced carbon monoxide readings at two addresses, including 1643 York Ave., where the power was reported out, and said Con Edison was on the scene. Those details weren’t part of the FDNY’s summary to East Side Feed.
Citizen later logged separate power outage reports at 1641 York Ave. at 1:51 p.m. and at 417 E. 87th St. at 7:50 p.m.
The FDNY’s summary didn’t include a cause.
