President-elect Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election was marked by both a decline in Democratic turnout and a boost in GOP votes within previous Democratic strongholds.

When it comes to New York City, while Trump saw the most gains in outer boroughs like Queens and the Bronx–Staten Island has always been a Trump stronghold–parts of Manhattan, including reliably Democratic neighborhoods like the Upper East Side, saw a significant shift toward the GOP this time around.

The City rolled out an interactive election map that shows how certain neighborhoods voted in 2024 vs. 2020. The publication broke the UES down into three areas:

  • 59th to 79th Street between the FDR Drive and Third Avenue: This stretch saw a Biden/Harris decline from 81% to 77%, while Trump rose from 17% to 21%.
  • Lastly, 79th to 96th Street between the FDR Drive and Third Avenue: Biden/Harris went from 83% to 79%, while Trump jumped from 15% to 19%.

  • Election District 73/048 (75th-78th Street, Fifth-Park Avenue + 78th-79th Street, Park-Madison Avenue): 29.9% for Trump.

But even though Trump’s gains across New York represented a larger trend toward a down-ballot “red wave” in the city, Democratic incumbents on the Upper East Side held onto all of their seats.

Eddie Gibbs, who represents parts of Yorkville and Carnegie Hill in the 68th Assembly District, received almost 99% of the vote after running unopposed, according to the Board of Elections.

State Senator Jose Serrano, who represents New York’s 29th Senatorial District, handily defeated Republican Tanya Carmichael, amassing 57,818 votes (81.7%) compared to Carmichael’s 12,958 votes (18.3%).
