Chip City Cookies has announced the closure of all of its locations, including its two shops on the Upper East Side, five years after the Astoria-born cookie chain first arrived in the neighborhood.

The UES shops at 1543 Second Avenue, between 80th and 81st streets, and 1371 Madison Avenue, between 95th and 96th streets, were among the company’s 22 remaining stores. All of them were set to close permanently at the close of business on Thursday, according to a message company president Nicolas Baizan sent to employees, which was reported by Nation’s Restaurant News.

Chip City confirmed the shutdown in an Instagram post on Friday. The company said it had decided to close all of its locations after trying to stabilize the business amid “significant macro-economic headwinds.” It thanked its employees and customers for their support over the past 10 years.

Chip City first came to the Upper East Side in October 2021, when it opened on Second Avenue. The company had been founded with a small Astoria storefront in 2017. Its Carnegie Hill shop followed in 2023, when Chip City opened its second UES location on Madison Avenue.

In his message to employees, Baizan said consumers are spending less and their preferences are changing, which hurt the company’s sales. Chip City representatives didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment from Nation’s Restaurant News on Friday.

The shutdown came just days after Chip City co-founder and former CEO Peter Phillips sued the company over unpaid salary, according to the same report. In March, Danny Meyer’s Enlightened Hospitality Investments took a majority stake in the company for $4 million. The firm first invested in Chip City in 2022.

The chain had grown to 45 company locations by 2024 and brought in more than $35 million in sales in 2025. It had been closing stores throughout this year, though, and was down to fewer than half that number by the time Baizan sent his message.
