Dig Inn Closes First Avenue Location

Dig Inn has closed one of its Upper East Side locations, leaving the neighborhood with one fewer spot to grab a meal from the fast-casual chain.

The shuttered restaurant is the one at 1319 First Avenue, between East 70th and East 71st Streets, which the company called DIG Lenox Hill. Dig Inn confirmed the closure on a farewell page on its website, thanking the neighborhood. The company didn’t say why it closed.

Dig Inn signed a 15-year lease for the 1,500-square-foot ground-floor space in May 2018, Commercial Observer reported at the time, with the chain’s brokers saying the location was meant to draw employees from the area’s hospitals. Google Maps imagery shows Dig Inn signage on the storefront as far back as 2019.

The closure comes about a month after Dig Inn named Eleven Madison Park alum Dylan Mendelsohn its new culinary director and rolled out a fall menu with eight new items, the company announced in a press release. Last year, the chain also dropped the “Dig” name it had used since 2019 and went back to Dig Inn, saying in a statement that fans had kept asking what happened to the “Inn,” as reported by Nation’s Restaurant News.

Dig Inn is pointing former Lenox Hill regulars to its 57th & Lex location at 709 Lexington Avenue, and its other Upper East Side location at 1297 Lexington Avenue. Both take pickup, delivery, and catering orders too.
