Olde City Cheesesteaks & Brew
Olde City Cheesesteaks & Brew, a sports bar which has injected Philadelphia-inspired foods throughout Manhattan, is planning to open a new location on the Upper East Side this fall.
The news comes from the establishment’s Instagram account which indicates a mid-October opening at 1664 Third Avenue (between 93rd and 94th streets). The space was previously home to Gerry’s Place, an Irish bar which closed in June after opening about a year earlier.

Olde City’s IG feed also showcases bar food like buffalo wings, chicken sandwiches, “Philly-style sandwiches,” and of course cheesesteaks. The offers an authentic Philly cheesesteak featuring Cheez Whiz, mild provolone, Cooper Sharp American and cheddar. The new location will be near East 93rd and Third Avenue.
Olde City is owned by Evan Stein, who launched the brand in 2022 following more than a decade owning and operating Shorty’s, a similar NYC establishment that Stein parted ways with in 2019. A native of the Philadelphia suburb of Newtown Square, Stein launched his cheesesteak venture with Tony Luke’s in 2005 following a career in financial services and digital advertising.
Olde City’s goal is “to take a South Philly-inspired menu with incredible food and pair it with a bar with 20 beers on tap,” Stein told Forbes in 2023. “Cheesesteaks, when they’re done right, are incredible.”

Aside from Olde City’s authentic version, the restaurant offers variations like Garlic Aioli (garlic aioli, grilled tomatoes, sweet peppers, fried onions, mild provolone), Bacon Chipotle Barbecue (bacon, chipotle BBQ, fried onions, mild provolone), Mango Habanero (mango habanero sauce, fried onions, ghost pepper jack), and the Special (broccoli rabe, Cooper Sharp American).
Olde City’s three existing locations in Manhattan (Chelsea, Nomad and Hell’s Kitchen) offer daily happy hours and specials, including offers during select sports games. Philly’s pro sports teams are the priority but crowds also gather at Olde City for Villanova basketball and Penn State Football.
“I’m a New Yorker,” Stein told Forbes, “with a love for my hometown city so much that I decided to devote my entire life and career to showing what Philly has to offer.” Learn more at loveoldecity.com and join our free newsletter below for updates.
