The woman arrested in Saturday’s stabbing inside an East 70s co-op lives in the building where it happened. Police have said little beyond that, but a version of what set the two women off has been circulating since the weekend, and it starts with a piece of medical equipment.

Barbara Salberg, 66, has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the stabbing of a 54-year-old woman at 210 East 73rd Street (between Second and Third avenues), the NYPD said Monday (though public court records show an attempted murder charge, too).Officers reached the building at 12:39 p.m. Saturday and found the younger woman with a stab wound to her stomach. Medics took her to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, where she was listed in stable condition.
Police haven’t said how the two women knew each other, what preceded the stabbing, or where in the building it took place. Everything that follows comes from the New York Post, which attributed it to sources it didn’t name.
The Post described Salberg as an ailing resident of the building and reported that the 54-year-old works as her home health aide. The two argued over Salberg’s oxygen mask in a first-floor apartment shortly before the stabbing, around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, the paper’s sources said. The aide hasn’t been publicly identified.
The Post also spoke with a neighbor who said he’d just gotten back from errands and was outside with a cigarette when the aide asked him for one. He turned her down, and then heard her yelling into her phone at someone who appeared to be her patient. “I do everything for you,” he recalled her saying, before listing the laundry she did and the care she provided.
