The New York City Department of Sanitation has issued a Snow Alert from Thursday, January 6 at 7pm until Friday, January 7 at 7pm. Up to 6 inches could accumulate overnight and into Friday afternoon.
The Department has salt spreaders ready to go and plans to pretreat the roadways before the snow begins to fall on Thursday. Its collection trucks will be converted into snow plows, which will be used once two inches have fallen.
Regarding trash and recycling: “The Sanitation Workers who collect trash and recycling are the same Sanitation Workers who plow and salt the streets, therefore trash and recycling collection will be delayed during snow removal operations. While residents may put material out at the curb following their normal schedule, snow operations take priority and collection delays are to be expected. The Department will return to collection operations as soon as operations allow.”
Bike lanes will be plowed and salted “after the emergency roadway work is underway.” Protected bike lanes will be pretreated with brine and cleared as quickly as possible. “Property owners may not move snow from sidewalks into bike lanes” or the rest of the street, the Department states.
According to weather.com, snowfall is most likely to take place between 2am and 8am, with a 99% chance of snow at 5am. The temperature is expected to range from the mid to low 30s throughout this 24 hour Snow Alert.
