Several more buildings on the block of Second Avenue between East 70th and 71st streets are slated to be demolished, according to recent permit filings and a report from Crain’s New York Business.

The report states that five buildings on the block at 1341-1347 Second Ave. and 242 East 71st Street, all of which are five stories tall, will be razed. The existing buildings contain more than 50 apartments and formerly housed three restaurants.

Crain’s reports that the permits were filed by Avdoo & Partners Development, an NYC-based development firm whose work includes several residential and commercial developments primarily in Brooklyn. The firm’s recent Boerum Hill residential development at 323 Bergen Street won a 2024 “Innovation in Residential” award from the Commercial Observer.

Though the five Second Ave. buildings in question are currently owned by Gatsby Enterprises, the permits suggest Avdoo & Partners–led by CEO and founder Shlomi Avdoo–is in line to purchase the properties.

Three other buildings across the street are also slated for demolition. The properties at 1382, 1384 and 1386 Second Ave. are owned by Torkian Group, which recently built The Delecor at 250 East 83rd Street.

The demolition plans on this block have collectively resulted in the displacement or closure of six small businesses including Italian restaurant Il Divo, InVite Health and Express Brows. Afghan Kebab House has moved to 1448 First Ave (between East 75th and 76th streets) and French eatery Jean Claude II has reopened further south at 1076 First Ave (and East 59th Street).

A New York Post op-ed from November 2024 with the headline “Rampant NYC development killing Second Avenue’s character,” lamented the impact of luxury residential development on the neighborhood’s food culture.
