Sakura Market’s location on 32nd and Park Avenue (Google Maps)
The ground floor of one of the most fought-over buildings on the Upper East Side finally has a new tenant. It’s a shop that sells sushi, not secondhand sweaters.

Sakura Market, a Japanese grocery and grab-and-go spot, has signed a lease for the former Goodwill store at 1114 First Avenue, on the corner of East 61st Street, Patch reported Friday. The brokerage that handled the deal, Meridian Retail Leasing, confirmed the details. The store will have about 3,700 square feet on the ground floor and another 2,700 square feet on a lower level, both with high ceilings.
Sakura Market already runs two Manhattan stores: one at Park Avenue and East 32nd Street, and one at Third Avenue and East 23rd Street. Its shelves carry fresh sushi and onigiri, Japanese snacks and drinks, and pantry basics.
No opening date has been announced.
The upper floors of the building house the neighborhood’s newest homeless shelter, which serves single women. It quietly opened in June after months of fighting.
The project was first announced in January as a 200-bed shelter for men. After neighbors pushed back, the city switched it to a women’s facility in February. Opponents then sued to stop it, and a judge rejected their challenge, clearing the way for the opening. Housing Solutions of New York operates the shelter, and the Department of Homeless Services makes the referrals.
