Fall Events Along the East River

This fall, join Friends of the East River Esplanade for a series of engaging events on the water.

The group’s mission is “the restoration and reinvention of this spectacular, though forlorn, section of the Esplanade from 60th to 120th Streets.” The organization advocates for restoration of the walk along the river, helps to maintain the Esplanade including the Bobby Wagner and John Finley walks, and sponsors free educational, environmental and fun events for the community.

Fall programming includes bird walks with the NYC Bird Alliance (formerly NYC Audubon) on September 18 and October 9. On both dates, participants will meet on the Esplanade at 96th Street at 6 p.m. to walk north along the river, viewing the “many water birds along the coast.” There is no limit on the number participants, though registration is encouraged.

On Sunday, September 22– the first official day of fall–IronStrength will be hosting a free yoga class at Andrew Haswell Green Park, at East 60th Street on the Esplanade from 1-2 p.m. IronStrength says the class will be a “relaxing flow” that is “perfect for all fitness levels.” Email to reserve a spot.

Learn to fish with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Wednesday, September 25 from 5-7 p.m. This event will also take place at East 96th Street on the river. Participants will learn about fishing techniques, ethics and management, along with aquatic ecology, and get to cast a rod and (hopefully) catch a fish. Spaces for this event are limited and will be first come, first served.

There will also be family-friendly events on three Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. at Andrew Haswell Green Park.

September 28 features live music with Lillimure, October 19 will be a Salsabration with Cuarteto Guataca, and October 27 will be a Halloween celebration with face painting and live music by Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks. All of these events are free, kid-friendly and come with free ice cream for everyone.
