According to @OLV on X, the movie will be filming on Wednesday, October 16.

Deadline reports “The movie will be set in the world of 1950s Ping Pong culture,” so onlookers may catch a glimpse of vintage European cars and old-fashioned street sets that have been sighted on previous filming days.

The movie is loosely based on the life of Martin ‘Marty’ Reisman, a professional American table tennis player and champion who passed away in 2012. Reisman was a native New Yorker born in Manhattan in 1930. A Men’s Journal profile describes him as a “ping-pong hustler” who started out playing for bets on the Lower East Side before becoming one of the most prominent names in the sport. Reisman became the 1958 and 1960 U.S. Men’s singles champion as well as the 1997 U.S. hardbat champion.

Early movie photos show a bespectacled Chalamet with a fifties-style haircut, thin mustache, and knitted vest as the titular ping pong star. Nicknamed ‘the Needle’ due to his lean build, Chalamet certainly suits the part physically.

Marty Supreme is directed by Josh Safdie and co-written by Josh Safdie and Ronald Bronstein. Safdie is best known for the thrillers Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019) starring Adam Sandler as an NYC jeweler. Ronald Bronstein is a longtime collaborator of Josh Safdie as well as his brother Benjamin Safdie.

Gwyneth Paltrow will be joining Chalamet in the cast, her first on-screen role since Avengers Endgame in 2019. Other cast members include Fran Drescher, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary (“Shark Tank”), Odessa A’zion and rapper Tyler, the Creator.
