The Upper East Side rallied hard to keep Mezzaluna open this spring, and for a while it worked. Now, it looks like the neighborhood’s favorite trattoria is headed for its final service after all, and soon.

The 1984 Italian institution (1295 Third Avenue between 74th and 75th streets) is expected to close for good on Sunday, November 1. After a reader tipped us off, we called the restaurant, and an employee told East Side Feed that November 1 would be the last day. We’ve also reached out to Mezzaluna on Instagram for confirmation from the owners and will update this story if we hear back. It’s the second time this year the restaurant’s future has been in doubt. In March, a TikTok video claiming Mezzaluna would close on March 29 sent regulars into a panic, a petition started circulating, and a staffer confirmed the news by phone. Days later, the restaurant posted on Instagram that it would remain open, and the neighborhood breathed a sigh of relief.
But as we reported in May, that reprieve was never meant to be permanent. In an essay for Air Mail, Gea Bozzi, daughter of founder Aldo Bozzi, wrote that the lease had been nearing its end and that committing to a new long-term one was complicated, between the restaurant’s 150-square-foot kitchen and what it would ask of her father after 42 years at the helm. In response to the outpouring from customers, including more than 2,000 petition signatures, he extended the lease, though only, she wrote, “for a couple more months.”
If November 1 holds, regulars have less than two weeks left to squeeze into one of those pink marble tables. Make it count, and order the tiramisu.
