The Upper East Side’s 19th Precinct is mourning the loss of a well-known NYPD mail clerk and Upper East Side resident affectionately known as “the mayor of 1 Police Plaza.”
“As a dedicated public servant, Peter Farley served in the NYPD with grace and kindness for 51 years. Today, our department mourns the passing of one of our beloved family members,” the 19th Precinct wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, along with a link to Monday’s funeral mass for Farley.

According to Farley’s eulogy posted on Dignity Memorial, he “died peacefully in his sleep” last week on March 5 at the age of 72. He is survived by his sisters, Roseanne Farley and Ruth Staben; his brother, Walter Farley; and his nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.
“Born in New York City on March 3, 1953, Peter was a proud resident of first Greenwich Village and then the Upper East Side. In 1973, he joined the NYPD as a civilian member and was employed there until his death,” the eulogy states. “He recently celebrated 51 years of service with the NYPD. Peter was affectionately called the ‘Mayor of One Police Plaza.’”
Farley’s first job with the NYPD was as a messenger for the 19th Precinct, according to Newsday. He was known to have hardly ever missed a day of work.
“Peter was an avid Mets fan and was invited to throw out the first pitch at Citifield in 2018. He enjoyed traveling, especially cruises,” his eulogy added. “He was a big Disney fan and visited Disney World many times.”
Public visitations were held for Farley on March 8 and 9 at Frank E. Campbell: The Funeral Chapel at 1076 Madison Ave. (between 81st and 82nd streets). The burial was held Monday at the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Monica at 413 E 79th St (between 79th and 80th streets).
