From a masked raccoon scaling scaffolding to a turkey evading capture in a street-side garden, wild creatures made surprise cameos across town this week—drawing curious crowds and NYPD response alike.

On Monday morning, a raccoon was spotted scurrying along scaffolding in front of East River House, a 20-story co-op at 505 East 79th Street (between York and East End avenues). The moment was captured on video and shared to the Citizen app. According to Our Town, police officers were dispatched after reports the animal might be rabid, though the masked bandit had fled the scene by the time they arrived.

Just a day earlier, a turkey was seen frolicking in the garden of a residential building at 400 East 56th Street (at First Avenue), just south of the Upper East Side. In a video posted by @whatisnewyork, a crowd of onlookers watched as three police officers attempted to wrangle the bird, which ultimately flew off to the sound of surprised gasps. One resident told Pix 11 News she had seen the same turkey earlier that morning perched on a railing along the East River Esplanade.

“That’s our Rosie from Roosevelt Island,” one Instagram commenter wrote about the turkey. “Praying she comes back safe to us safe, where she is loved and left at peace. She’s lived here for a year, and never caused issues.” Here’s an article about Rosie that was published in January by the Roosevelt Islander Online
