IKEA has announced that it will be closing its Manhattan location at 999 Third Avenue at 59th Street on January 1, 2022.
In a press release, the Swedish furniture brand wrote that it is “actively searching for a new Manhattan location for its smaller store format.” The 59th Street store opened in April 2019, and was the first “Planning Studio” IKEA opened in the country.
“IKEA is continuously looking to create a better customer experience, while ensuring our business remains viable and relevant now and, in the future,” said Linda Santing, Area Vice President, IKEA U.S. “As we position our business for long-term growth and investments, we had to reevaluate our Upper East Side location due to the high rent and the lower-than-expected foot traffic. We remain committed to the New York City area and look forward to securing a new home for our planning studio.”
Appointments at the Third Avenue store will be available until December 18, at which point all existing appointments will be transferred to other locations in the tristate area.
A statement from IKEA also mentions that “All Upper East Side co-workers affected by this closure will be given opportunities to transition to roles in other parts of the business at IKEA Brooklyn, IKEA Queens or other NY market units.”
