Cinema 123 by Angelika, at 1001 Third Avenue (between 59th and 60th streets), is wrapping up its run after today. A staff member confirmed the closing to East Side Feed by phone on Thursday. Showbiz411 first reported the news. The theater’s final screening will be “You Can See Everything,” according to Showbiz411, which pointed out the irony of the title.
The closing comes about six months after East Side Feed reported that the property was listed for sale for roughly $50 million. At the time, marketing materials pitched the roughly 8,000-square-foot lot for redevelopment, with possible uses including residential, retail, commercial, hotel, or mixed-use.
Another former UES movie theater is getting a second life. The old City Cinemas at 210 East 86th Street closed in May 2019, and in September, East Side Feed reported that Happier Grocery is moving in. The wellness-focused market signed a 20,500-square-foot lease for the space and is expected to open in the second half of 2027.
Cinema 123 is part of the Angelika chain and was known for series like “Musical Mondays” and “Top Secret Cinema.”
Showbiz411 noted that the closing is the latest in a long line of lost Manhattan movie houses. Others include the Baronet and Coronet, which were once nearby on Third Avenue, as well as the Beekman and the 68th Street Playhouse.
